How it works

Inputs: Birth date, traditional gender category, birth time zone and the home’s outward-facing bearing. Birth time is optional except on a day crossing Li Chun.
Method: This site uses the Li Chun instant to select the Kua year, then applies its source-checked Ming Gua table and Eight Mansions direction rules. The facing bearing is converted to the opposite sitting direction internally. Birth-time and measurement boundaries stay undecided when the inputs cannot resolve them; symbolic directions do not predict real-world outcomes.

How to read it

Read your Kua number and personal group first, then compare the house and direction chart. This site uses the Li Chun solar-term boundary, not January 1. If your birth day crosses Li Chun and the time is unknown, the personal result remains undecided. Direction labels are traditional classifications, not guarantees of wealth, health or relationship outcomes.

Kua number vs. house gua: which one are you reading?

Your Kua number, also called Ming Gua, comes from your birth details and the male or female category in the traditional table. Your house gua comes from the home’s sitting direction, opposite its outward-facing bearing. Changing the home’s bearing changes the house comparison, not your personal Kua number.

The personal and house charts each assign eight traditional direction labels. Read which chart a label belongs to before comparing them; a personal direction is not automatically the same as a house direction.

East group Kua numbers: 1 (Kan), 3 (Zhen), 4 (Xun) and 9 (Li).
West group Kua numbers: 2 (Kun), 6 (Qian), 7 (Dui) and 8 (Gen).
What happens to Kua 5?: The centre has no trigram. The traditional male table assigns it to 2 (Kun), and the female table to 8 (Gen).
Method and limits: The tables follow Ba Zhai Ming Jing, cross-checked against Yang Zhai Shi Shu. The source-checked year range is 1504–2043. Using the exact Li Chun instant as the year boundary is this site’s convention; the sources do not settle that boundary.

Worked example: Kua 1 with a south-facing home

Try these inputs in the calculator above: 15 June 1990, male, birth time zone Asia/Shanghai, and outward-facing bearing 180° with true north selected. Leave birth time blank. This date does not cross Li Chun, so a birth time is not needed to settle the Kua number. No magnetic correction or measurement uncertainty is applied in this example.

The result is Kua 1 (Kan), East group. Facing south at 180° means sitting north at 0°: the house is also Kan, East group. The personal and house labels therefore coincide in this example. “Favourable” and “unfavourable” below are traditional categories, not predictions of what will happen in a room.

How to use the chart for a desk, bed or room

This is the site’s practical reading workflow, not an additional classical rule. First distinguish a direction you face from a room’s position on a floor plan. The calculator does not measure your home, locate its centre or infer the layout. A direction label alone cannot determine where a bed or desk should go.

Enter the measured outward-facing bearing, not the sitting bearing; the calculator reverses it for you. If your compass uses magnetic north, choose that reference and enter the local declination when known. Keep the measurement uncertainty visible. Near a house-gua boundary, remeasure before relying on the house comparison; an uncertain house bearing does not change a settled personal Kua number.

If you try a different arrangement, keep it small and reversible. Compare actual comfort, daylight, ventilation and access, and keep exits clear. A traditional direction label is not evidence that an arrangement will improve health, wealth or relationships.

Can I calculate a Kua number for someone born in or after 2000?

Yes. Enter the full birth date rather than applying a two-digit-year shortcut. The source-checked year table covers 1504–2043, including births in and after 2000. Dates outside that source range do not gain the same verification status merely because the calculator returns a result.

Why can Kua calculators give different results near Chinese New Year?

Year-boundary conventions can differ. This site uses the exact Li Chun solar-term instant as its stated convention, not January 1 or Lunar New Year. Check the birth time zone. Birth time is optional on ordinary dates; if that local day crosses Li Chun, an unknown time leaves the personal result undecided until you supply it.

Should I enter the house facing direction or the sitting direction?

Enter the outward-facing bearing in degrees, with true north as 0°. The sitting direction is opposite; the calculator performs that conversion. Do not reverse it yourself. A selected mountain’s centre degree is only an approximation. Use measured readings and the correction options when you know the north reference or measurement uncertainty.

Can these directions guarantee better sleep, wealth or relationships?

No. The eight directions are traditional classifications, not verified predictions of life outcomes. Use them only as an optional comparison for reversible room arrangements. Daylight, ventilation, accessibility, fire safety and actual comfort take priority; near a measurement boundary, the house comparison remains provisional.
