How to Read a Zi Wei Dou Shu 12-Palace Chart

A practical, source-aware way to enter a Zi Wei Dou Shu birth chart, freeze school differences, find the Life and Body Palaces, and use the twelve-palace layout without turning placement into a prediction.

Start with the conventions

This tutorial explains how to use the Xuanshu Zi Wei Dou Shu calculator. It is a site-authored reading workflow, not a classical quotation and not a prediction. The worked example is also site-authored: it is a fixed input chosen so another reader can repeat the same calculation.

Before you interpret any palace, freeze the conventions that can make two charts look different. The calculator records differences in leap-month handling, the Ren-year Hua Ke star, and the first palace used for major periods. It uses its stated convention for each item and keeps the major-period alternative visible. If you compare another calculator, match the calendar, leap-month setting, birth hour, time zone, location correction and school convention first. A different convention is a different comparison case, not evidence that one page has silently made a mistake.

Use one complete input

Open Calculation settings and choose Precise details; the Place adjustment tier also exposes the location fields. Choose Gregorian, select Beijing from the location results so the form fills Asia/Shanghai and longitude 116.4074, then enter date 2000-01-01, time 12:00 and Male. Calculate the first chart. For the worked career reading, open Reading preferences (optional) below that result and select Career and work. Enter “How should I review my work responsibilities?” in the follow-up question field, then choose Continue; the calculator keeps the same birth inputs. Do not replace a known time with a guessed lunar date. If you type a place without selecting a verified result, check the time zone and coordinates before submitting.

The calculator applies its solar-time correction: the recorded corrected time is 11:42, which remains in the Wu hour. The normalized lunar date is 1999, month 11, day 25. The calculator returns Life Palace at Wu and Body Palace at Wu, with an Earth five bureau, and routes a work question to the Career Palace. The independent rule reconstruction used for the site's accuracy checks returns the same lunar date, hour branch, Life and Body Palace branches, five-bureau result, Zi Wei position at Wu and Tian Fu position at Xu. Those are structural checks; they do not prove a life outcome.

Read the twelve palaces as a map

The twelve palaces divide a chart into named areas: Life, Siblings, Marriage, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Fortune and Parents. Start with the Life Palace and Body Palace so you know the chart's orientation. Then locate the palace that matches the question. The palace name is a filing system for the question, not a sentence about what must happen.

For the fixed work example, the calculator identifies the Career Palace at Xu. Its main stars are Lian Zhen and Tian Fu. The site translates those names into modern prompts about rules, boundaries, management and carrying responsibility. That translation is explicitly site-authored. Keep it separate from the placement fact: first record where the stars are, then ask which real conditions make the topic visible.

Next, inspect the opposite palace and the two trine palaces. The site's structural rule treats the opposite branch and the two three-harmony branches as the related set. Read the four locations together, then return to the question palace. If one palace has no main star, the surrounding relationship is part of the reading; do not fill the gap with a made-up star meaning.

A repeatable reading order

First, verify the normalized birth details and the convention notices. Second, write down the Life Palace, Body Palace and bureau. Third, mark the question palace and its related palaces. Fourth, list the displayed main and supporting stars without scoring them. Fifth, check the major-period range, keeping both recorded first-palace conventions in view when the page shows them. Only after those steps should you translate the structure into a question you can observe in ordinary life.

Do not add a star-count score. The site's accuracy contract does not treat equal positive and negative star points as a classical rule. Brightness labels are displayed but are not used to drive the reading. The calculator also does not use this chart to claim that a job, relationship, health event or financial result will occur.

Turn the chart into a useful check

For the work example, turn the Career Palace into checks about actual responsibility, decision rights, resources, review standards and a sustainable path. Look for repeated evidence in documents, conversations and completed work. If those facts do not support the proposed interpretation, keep the interpretation provisional. A chart can organize a question and a time period; it cannot replace the facts you need to decide.

When the birth time is uncertain, preserve the plausible time range and compare the resulting charts. When a leap month or a school convention is involved, keep the alternatives labeled. This method protects the twelve-palace map from being mistaken for a guarantee and gives a novice a clear next step: verify inputs, read structure, then check reality.

What do I need to make a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart?

Enter the birth date, birth time, gender category used by the calculation, time zone and place or longitude. Check whether the date is solar or lunar and record any leap-month setting.

Why should I read the convention notice before a palace?

Leap-month handling, the Ren-year Hua Ke star and the first major-period palace have recorded school differences. Freeze those choices before comparing a palace or period.

Does a main star predict my career or relationship?

No. A placement is a chart fact and the modern star wording is a site-authored reading aid. Use real responsibilities, documents and repeated behavior to check any interpretation.

What if my birth time is uncertain?

Keep the plausible times separate and compare the resulting charts. Do not invent a precise hour just to obtain one confident-looking palace.
