How to Cast a Liu Yao Hexagram with Three Coins
Learn the Xuanshu manual-entry workflow for a three-coin Liu Yao cast: record each throw, convert it to a line from the bottom up, and read the primary and changed hexagrams without turning a chart into a promise.
Ask one question first
Liu Yao works best here as a way to organize one concrete question. This tutorial uses the site's visible Manual mode, labelled “I cast it myself” in English, with a fixed site-authored example. It explains how to preserve a physical or already-recorded throw and how to read the chart structure; it does not promise a yes-or-no outcome or replace contract, financial or professional review.
The calculator also offers a Three coins option, but that route is a program simulation. This tutorial uses Manual mode so another reader can repeat the chart from the same six recorded values. The source boundary is stated in the product: the three-coin route follows the coin method recorded in Bu Shi Quan Shu, while the question of which physical face counts as yang has more than one historical convention. This tutorial follows the site's mapping and does not pretend to settle that dispute.
Choose Manual mode and a fixed time
Open Calculation settings and choose Specified date and time. In the time-mode selector, also choose Specified date and time rather than the current time. Enter question “Should I accept this contract?”, date 2026-10-08, time 14:18 and time zone Asia/Shanghai. Under Casting method choose “I cast it myself” (Manual). In the field “Six line values (bottom to top)”, enter 9, 7, 8, 7, 8, 7. These six values are the record that another reader can enter.
The archived site example used a generated virtual-throw path; it is retained only as a reference mapping. Its lines were: line one, back back back, 3 + 3 + 3 = 9, an old yang moving line; line two, back face face, 3 + 2 + 2 = 7, a young yang line; line three, face back back, 2 + 3 + 3 = 8, a young yin line; line four, face back face, 2 + 3 + 2 = 7, a young yang line; line five, back face back, 3 + 2 + 3 = 8, a young yin line; line six, face back face, 2 + 3 + 2 = 7, a young yang line. In this mapping, one back is a 7, two backs are an 8, three backs are a moving 9, and three faces would be a moving 6. To reproduce that archived example, use the visible Manual field with the fixed date and time above and enter only 9, 7, 8, 7, 8, 7 from bottom to top; the face sequence is documentation, not a second input.
Do not reverse the rows when drawing the hexagram. Bottom-up order is the key input rule. The calculator returns primary Fire over Lake, Kui, inner Water over Fire, Ji Ji, and changed Fire over Water, Wei Ji, with the first line moving. The original hexagram describes the arrangement being asked about; the changed hexagram shows the configuration after the recorded moving line changes. Those labels organize the reading. They do not establish what a contract will do.
Check the chart before interpreting it
An independent structural check matches the key arrangement for these inputs: Gen palace, fourth-stage position, Self at line four, Other at line one, void branches Zi and Chou, and the first line as the moving line. It does not assess the English hexagram names or the question’s outcome. The calculator result shows those same structural fields and the same original and changed hexagram names.
That separation matters. The calculator supplies the complete user-facing chart and interpretation layer. The oracle supplies an independent check of the structural arrangement. A passing structure check is not a guarantee about the question.
Read original, moving and changed layers
Start with the primary hexagram as the current arrangement. Then identify the moving line and its position. Here the movement is at the bottom, so begin by checking the foundation of the matter: the first document, first exchange, first obligation or first practical step. Next read the changed hexagram as a direction of change, not as a replacement for the present facts.
After that, inspect Self and Other, Na Jia, Six Relatives, month and day strength, and any listed support or restriction. For a contract question, translate those labels into checkable items: the exact terms, responsible parties, deadlines, payment conditions, evidence, exit clauses and who can actually approve a change. The site's support and restriction summary is a site model that groups classical signals; it is not a quotation and it is not a probability score.
Repeat responsibly
Manual mode is deterministic from the visible values. Reusing the same question, date, time, time zone and six line values reproduces this structural example. If you cast a real set of coins, record each resulting value manually from bottom to top. Do not keep recasting because the first chart is inconvenient; the product records a classical warning about repeated questioning.
Use the chart as a structured prompt for evidence. If the written contract, payment record or professional advice contradicts an attractive reading, follow the evidence. Liu Yao can show how to inspect an original line, a moving line and a changed hexagram; it cannot sign, reject or guarantee the contract for you.
Which line do I enter first in a three-coin Liu Yao cast?
Enter the first throw as line one, the bottom line. Continue upward until the sixth throw is the top line. Do not enter the rows from top to bottom.
How do three coins become a line value?
The site records a face as 2 and a back as 3, then adds the three values. One back gives 7, two backs 8, three backs moving 9, and three faces moving 6.
What is the changed hexagram?
It is the hexagram after the recorded moving lines change. Read the primary hexagram as the current arrangement and the changed hexagram as the structural direction of change, then verify real conditions.
Are virtual coins required to reproduce the worked example?
No. Choose “I cast it myself” (Manual) and enter 9, 7, 8, 7, 8, 7 from bottom to top with the recorded date, time and time zone. The same recorded inputs reproduce the chart without a new virtual cast.
